Movie Script Outline Techniques

The outline is the first step to creating a movie script, serving as a guide throughout the writing process. Outlines contain everything that needs to be included in a script, such as characters, plot and scenery. During the writing process, the outline will help in deciding the order of action sequences and act as inspiration should you suffer from momentary writer's block.
  1. Brainstorm

    • Brainstorming is the process of writing down everything that comes to mind for a script, including characters, scenery and action sequences. This type of outline can be as simple as writing one or two word phrases or more complex descriptive sentences about different elements of a script.

Try to write on one side of a sheet of paper so everything is easily accessible when referring back to the outline. Once you have written everything you can think of about your movie script, start organizing each item into a storyline.

    Plan the Plot

    • Plan the plot by writing the outline in the order you want the storyline of the script to follow. Start at the beginning and write down where the characters come from, where they are to go and where they will eventually end up. While writing the plot, add smaller details to help describe the scenery and some action sequences that will occur throughout the storyline.

    List Outline

    • Organize characters, locations and action sequences into lists for each portion of the script's storyline. Information listed can include character action and conflict, scenery shots and changes, or other smaller details about the movie. These lists will become helpful as a point of reference when writing the script and tweaking action sequences or character development.
