How to Pitch a Screenplay Idea With How, Who, Where & What

Every great movie starts with an idea. Once a screenwriter has an idea for a movie, the next thing she must do is develop a well-crafted pitch. Pitching a screenplay idea requires the writer to summarize the story in one or two concise sentences, called a logline. The logline, or pitch, must capture the audience's interest, make the listener want to read the script and ultimately make the movie. Pitch meetings are generally short, usually five to 15 minutes, so the writer must get her idea across quickly and effectively.

  1. How to Pitch a Screenplay Idea

    • 1

Introduce the main character. Who the screenplay is about is a key element of the pitch. Give the listener insight into any interesting personality quirks the character might have. Use adjectives to paint the picture. For example, you might describe your main character as a "down-on-his-luck writer," or a "spoiled socialite."

    • 2

Set the stage for your movie. Does your story take place in a small town or a bustling city? Knowing where the story takes place will help the producer get a sense of the budget for the movie. A movie set in a small, country town will cost less to produce than a movie set in a variety of international locations.

    • 3

Describe what the character wants. Your character's goal is what drives the action of the movie. If the character doesn't want anything, he will not act and therefore the movie will not have any momentum.

    • 4

State how the character intends to reach his goal. Explain what action he will take. For example, you pitch might be something like, "A small-town girl moves to the big city to become an actress."

    • 5

Explain what obstacles stand in the way of the character reaching his goal. Conflict is essential in a movie. If the character faces no opposition, the movie will be over in five minutes. Clearly state what the character is up against. For example, "A hard-nosed cop, in a race against time, must stop a group of bank robbers who have taken his daughter hostage" is a pitch that effectively states the character's goal and what he must overcome to achieve it.
