Research casting directors in your area. Get familiar with the names of the top casting directors and the types of projects they cast.
Compile a list of these casting directors' names, addresses and the projects they are currently casting. Include the names of casting associates and assistants in your list as these people often have the power to call people in to audition. Casting directors tend to move around a lot depending on what they are currently casting so you'll need to update this list often.
Look into casting director workshops. These workshops are great ways to meet and read for casting directors. Essentially, you pay a fee to participate in the workshop. There are usually about 20 to 30 actors participating in it. The casting director will begin by giving a brief overview of his office and how they work as well as their current projects. He will then hand out sides and pair actors up to perform scenes. You will have about 10 to 15 minutes to work on your scene and then perform it for the casting director. Always bring a headshot and resume to every workshop you attend. Most casting workshops accept credit cards, checks and cash as methods of payment.
Follow up with a thank you note to the casting director after you meet her. A simple note thanking her for the advice shared and her time opens the door for continuing communication.
Send postcard updates to the casting directors you have met. You should have postcards with your headshot on the front printed up for mailings. Whenever you have career news such as booking a job or a television airing, send a mailing to all your casting director contacts. Aim to send postcard updates every six to eight weeks but make sure you have something relevant to say on the postcards.
Contact any unions of which you are a member and ask them about casting director events. SAG (Screen Actors Guild) holds casting director workshops which are free for members. These workshops operate in the same manner as paid casting director workshops. As they are free, they do tend to fill up quickly.
Attend entertainment social events. The various unions as well as other entertainment companies often hold networking events. You never know who will be at these gatherings so it's wise to attend and meet people in the industry.
