How to Get an Acting Agent in Michigan

The day has come when it is no longer necessary to migrate to Los Angeles or New York to get representation as an actor. Talent agents have opened offices in cities throughout the U.S., including Detroit Michigan. Agents give actors access to auditions they would not have gotten otherwise, helping them secure work in film, television, theater and commercial industries. With some talent and determination you may be on your way to signing a contract with an agent.

Instructions

    • 1

Create your resume listing film and television credits first, commercial credits second and theater last. Your resume should be no more than a page long. Your name should be in large type at the top of the page; underneath the name should be your eye color, hair color, height and contact information. At the bottom of the page list your special skills and education. Special skills are anything unique that you can bring to the table: playing an instrument, speaking a foreign language, playing a sport or moonlighting as a belly-dancer are all good examples.

    • 2

Staple your resume to the back of your headshot using one staple at the top and one at the bottom with the text visible. Trim the edges of the resume so it is the same size as your headshot. The headshot should be 8 inches by 10 inches with a white or black border and your name printed clearly below the image, a professional head shot photographer will automatically format the shot with these specifics. Get 15 to 25 copies only, as when you sign with an agent they will most likely want to choose the shot they use to represent you. A professional head shot will showcase your personality and get the attention of an agent.

    • 3

Write a cover letter. If you are just starting out the cover letter is a chance to grab the agent’s attention. Share things about yourself, but don’t be too personal. Keep it light, engaging and professional. Mention some of your past work, maybe include a favorite experience performing. If you have worked with notable artists it may be a good idea to mention their names inside the cover letter.

    • 4

Paperclip the cover letter to your headshot and resume. The cover letter will most likely be thrown away after a quick read, but the resume will stay attached to the headshot and filed away.

    • 5

Search the internet for agents in your area. Most agents in Michigan will have offices in Detroit. Collect the address and phone number of each agent and list them in order of most prominent to least. Another way to find out about agents is taking an acting class or going out for an open audition; you'll meet other actors there who will have personal experience with agents and it is a good way to find out who is getting work from their agent.

Taking an on-camera class may help you get an agent.

Some agents accept headshot and resumes electronically. This is a fast and environmentally friendly way to submit to a talent agency. An agent who accepts electronic submissions will usually post a link on their website.
