Erotomania is a rare mental illness in which a person has an intense, delusional belief that someone is in love with them. This belief is usually based on very little evidence, such as a stranger smiling at them or complimenting them. People with erotomania may become preoccupied with the person they believe is in love with them, and they may try to contact them repeatedly or even stalk them.
