What is a movie grip?

In the filmmaking industry, a grip is a member of the crew responsible for setting up and operating various equipment to support the camera and lighting departments. Grips are not associated with the camera department itself; typically, they work either with the camera operators in the camera department, or with the gaffer in the lighting/electrical department.

The grips' department, led by the key grip, is responsible for the equipment needed for operating the cameras, including items like camera dollies, cranes, tripods, and camera stabilizers.

Grips also:

- prepare tracks and smooth pathways for camera dollies and cranes

- set up lighting equipment

- assist with transporting equipment on set

- ensure the safety and security of equipment and crew members

- set up filters, scrims, and other light-modifying materials and equipment

The grip department is essential to the success of a film production, as it provides the necessary support for capturing high-quality shots and ensuring the safety and efficiency of the filming process.
