Pixar's first short film was "The Adventures of Andre and Wally B," released in 1986. Four more quickly followed: "Luxo, Jr." in 1986, "Red's Dream" in 1987, "Tin Toy" in 1988 and "Knick Knack" in 1989. After that, feature-length films took center stage at Pixar for a while, though "Tin Toy" won the Oscar for Best Animated Short the year it was released. (In addition, the animated lamp in "Luxo Jr." eventually became a part of Pixar's logo.)
"Toy Story," released in 1995, explored the world of a young boy's room, where the toys came to life when no one was watching. Budgeted at $30 million, it grossed more than 10 times that much. Two more films soon followed: "A Bug's Life" in 1998 and "Toy Story 2" in 1999. Both proved equally successful, and cemented Pixar's reputation for high-quality computer animation.
In 2001, Pixar released its fourth animated feature, "Monsters Inc.," which serendipitously coincided with the first Oscar being awarded for Best Animated Feature. "Monsters Inc." did not win that year (it lost to "Shrek"), but of the next five Pixar feature-length films--"Finding Nemo" in 2003, "The Incredibles" in 2004, "Cars" in 2006, "Ratatouille" in 2007, and "WALL*E" in 2008--four won the Oscar. "Up," released in 2009, was the10th feature film for Pixar.
Pixar began making shorts again in 1997, which could be divided into two general categories. The first entails shorts with all-new characters and situations. Seven were released between 1997 and 2009, most of which were shown in front of a Pixar feature-length film: "Geri's Game" in 1997, "For the Birds" in 2000, "Boundin'" in 2003, "One Man Band" in 2005, "Lifted" in 2006, "Presto" in 2008 and "Partly Cloudy" in 2009. The first two--"Geri's Game" and "For the Birds"--won Oscars for Best Animated Short.
In addition to stand-alone shorts, Pixar has produced a number of shorts featuring characters from their feature-length films. They usually appear on the DVD release of said features as a bonus. Six were produced between 2002 and 2009: "Mike's New Car," "Jack-Jack Attack," "Mater and the Ghostlight," "Your Friend the Rat," "BURN*E" and "Dug's Special Mission."
