How to Make Movie Popcorn at Home

Life gets busy, or money gets tight and that movie you wanted to see in the theater has already moved on to DVD. Watching movies at home can be an enjoyable experience, but a bag of microwave popcorn tastes and smells different from the piping hot buckets purchased at movie concession stands. According to Alison Koehler, manager of Ruby Theater in Chelan, Washington, making movie theater at home is possible, it just takes a little know-how.

Things You'll Need

  • Large pot with lid
  • 1/4 cup of canola popping oil or coconut oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon Flavacol brand theater popcorn salt
  • 1 1/2 cups popping corn
  • Oven mitts or pot holders

Instructions

    • 1

On medium-low heat, place your pot on the burner and add the oil, then popcorn kernels, then salt on top and begin stirring.

    • 2

Fit the non-glass lid on top of the pot and slide the pot gently around the burner until you hear the popcorn beginning to pop.

    • 3

Begin to gently shake your pot around the burner until two or three seconds pass between pops.

    • 4

Move the pot to a cool burner. Wait to open the lid until the popping ceases.

    • 5

Taste test. Add optional toppings if desired.
