What Components Are Needed to Play Netflix?

Netflix "single-handedly created the online movie rental business," says entrepreneur Sanjay Dalal in "Creativity and Innovation in Business." The California-based subscription service has been offering DVD rentals and downloads in the United States since 1999, branching out north to Canada in 2010. Netflix movies can be viewed with relatively basic system requirements.
  1. Netflix Account

    • To order a movie from Netflix, you must have a paid or free-trial Netflix account.

    TV

    • To play a Netflix DVD, you need a TV that operates on an NTSC system, the standard in North America. Most Netflix DVDs will not play on a PAL TV, the standard in Europe.

    DVD Player

    • You will need a Region 1 DVD player, which is standard in North America. Region 1 DVDs also work on region-free (or multi-region or all-region) DVD players.

    Computer or Video Game Console

    • You can play Netflix DVDs on a PC, laptop, Mac or video game console that has a DVD driver and DVD-playing software installed.

Netflix also offers streamed movies. Download to a PC or laptop with Windows XP or higher and an IE 6.0 or Firefox 2 browser installed, or a Mac running on OS 10.4.8 or higher and with Safari 3 or Firefox 2 installed. You can also download Netflix movies to a Wii, PS3 or Xbox 360.

    Internet Connection

    • To download and view movies from Netflix, you need a fast, reliable Internet connection, such as broadband or cable.
