Check that the video to be converted is in PAL format and that the tape is not simply a broken NTSC tape. This can be done by playing the tape in a video cassette recorder purchased in a PAL region. Both NTSC and PAL video cassettes look identical; however, they are incompatible unless played in a multi-region video cassette recorder.
Bring the cassette to a store in New York specializing in PAL-to-NTSC video conversions. Rates at these stores will vary. These stores convert PAL-format video into NTSC-format video, which is then copied onto a blank cassette. The following list does not constitute all the shops in New York that handle PAL-to-NTSC video conversion; others may be found through the phonebook or through search engines.

Confirm that the copied video cassette works. Due to the nature of PAL-to-NTSC conversion, errors sometimes occur that render copied videos unwatchable or that cause noticeable damage. This can be done by watching the converted video cassette in a NTSC-compatible video cassette recorder.
