What kills the aliens in movie Independence Day?

The aliens in Independence Day are killed by a computer virus that is uploaded into their mothership by Captain Steven Hiller and David Levinson.

The virus, created by Levinson, disrupts the alien technology, causing their weapons to malfunction and ultimately leading to the destruction of the mothership and the majority of their fleet.
