List the movie tickets, DVDs, tubs of popcorn and other movie purchases you make in a year. Work out the quantities you purchase of each item in a year. Place these numbers in a column on the spreadsheet or notepad.
Tally the quantities of each item, and multiply by last year's prices. Insert the results in the next column on the spreadsheet or notepad.
Multiply the quantities of each item by this year's prices, and place in the third column on the spreadsheet or notepad.
Add the results from the second and third columns to find the total costs from the two time periods. Use these totals in household budgeting or to compare your spending on movies with other entertainment.
Divide this year's total by last year's total, and multiply by 100. This figure is your personal movie price index, the amount that the price of watching movies has increased or will increase by.
