Sherwood Pictures is a Christian production company that was started by the Sherwood Church in Albany, Georgia. Most of the people who contributed to the movie's success were members of the congregation or residents of the city of Albany. The city itself provided police cars and ambulances for filming purposes as well as for security and safety.
Since the plot of the movie centers around a fire captain, many of the scenes take place within a fire station or on the site of rescue operations. The Albany Fire Department donated the use of its fire stations and vehicles for the filming of "Fireproof." The real-life firefighters also provided support and training throughout the filming.
In the movie, the main character's wife works at a hospital, and many of the film's scenes take place while she is at work. Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, Georgia donated a hospital wing and the use of its cafeteria for filming. The hospital also provided space to be used as a production office.
A local church donated two homes that were used in the movie. These buildings were condemned to be bulldozed, but they were used as filming locations for scenes with fires instead. "It was really carefully done and they worked very closely with the fire department on those scenes," said Nancy Lovell, a partner in the Lovell-Fairchild communications agency, who was on the set during the filming of "Fireproof." Another residential home, which was newly built and up for sale, was donated to be used as a set.
Although the production company is based in the city of Albany, not all of the filming occurred in that one location. The town scenes from the movie were filmed in the city of Shellman, Georgia. Shellman is located approximately 35 miles northwest of Albany.
