The Sources of Crazy Ideas for 3-D Animations

As film and animation technologies continue to evolve, filmmakers and movie studios look for more inspirations for concepts for 3-D animation projects. Because of the relatively limitless possibilities of producing animated and photo-realistic visuals, they can even think of the craziest ideas and produce them as computer-generated imagery (CGI) works. Yet, many of these sources for 3-D animation ideas haven't really changed much for the many years of film's existence. Aside from original ideas, many sources for concepts and stories come from comics, graphic novels, fairy tales and best-selling books.
  1. Video Games

    • Fans of video games become a ready market for 3-D movies. Whether their cinematic counterparts turn out as live action or computer animation flicks, these films typically involve the use of CGI and visual effects using 3-D perspectives. Many studios are also encouraged to release in stereoscopic 3-D where viewers watch movies not only in 3-D CGI, but also in theatrical 3-D format where they use 3-D glasses during screenings. Because of the challenging and visually appealing nature of video games, they typically become ideal subjects for cool and crazy animation and special effects. A number of these video games made into 3-D movie projects include "Final Fantasy," "Spy Hunter" and "Resident Evil."

    Fairy Tales

    • With the magic coming from fairy tales and their general charm, especially for the children audience, many studios find it encouraging to produce 3-D animated films adapted from fairy tale sources. The feasibility of creating various elements that can showcase breathtaking visuals, crazy stunts or spellbinding moments become the primary considerations when turning fairy tale stories into 3-D animation movies. Examples of successful animated fairy tale films released in 3-D format include "Tangled" and "A Christmas Carol."

    Books and Novels

    • A number of best-selling books and novels become sources of unusual visuals for 3-D movies. Loyal fans of these books and novels, along with the general public becoming interested in the cinematic interpretation of such literary pieces, allow these works to become valuable inspirations for filmmakers and movie studios. Whether these films become faithful adaptations or even twisted interpretations of artists' crazy imaginations, the animation format readily gives them the upper hand when it comes to making their ideas come to life as 3-D offerings. Popular examples of such kind of projects include "Coraline" and "How to Train Your Dragon."

    Comics and Graphic Novels

    • Because of the impact of comics and graphic novels as visual art forms, many crazy ideas for movies take inspiration from them. Although there are projects that only tend to use these as pegs for their original ideas, many film projects also directly come from comic books and graphic novels. These motion picture adaptations typically become big movie franchises, and many of them feature superheroes and exemplary human characters. Although most projects get released as live-action offerings, the contribution of animation and special effects to these projects is uncontestable. Some popular examples of these CGI-heavy 3-D movies are "Green Lantern," "Captain America" and "Cowboys and Aliens."
