Sources for Lighting Props

In photography, theater or movie a lighting prop is used for two primary purposes: to provide a scene's required lighting needs and to also serve as a prop to make the scene more visually enticing. It can also symbolize something important in the story or it can be used as a visual support for the artistic look of the photo, film or play. Others may simply incorporate it to justify the need for a lighting source on that specific area of a scene.
  1. Studios and Warehouses

    • Established photography studios and theater and movie warehouses store the props used before and after the shoots or screenings. Since big studios and warehouses tend to accumulate props with the many productions they produce, they are major sources of recycled lighting props. These allow productions to maximize the resources they already own and allot more money to other parts of the production. If necessary the reused lighting props can be simply cleaned, refurbished or modified for minimal cost or for no cost at all through the production's art department team.

    Auctions and Specialty Stores

    • Props in movies and plays are sometimes sold to third-party stores who can resell them in bulk or retail. These third-party stores are usually vintage stores or specialty shops that feature actual props in movies and stage plays. As lighting props including lampshades and chandeliers are typically used in these types of productions, it is often easy to find such choices in a number of these stores. The more famous productions with props used by A-list celebrities often end up in auctions for interested fans and collectors.

    Rental Shops

    • Rental shops are practical sources for lighting props for productions that don't want to invest in their own props. Rental shops usually have replicas of popular movie or theatrical props or general props a typical production would need. Some rental shops also buy actual props used in film and theatrical productions from studios. Renting lighting props from these shops also benefit productions looking for rare, intricate props not used in modern times such as medieval candle holders or Greek torches.

    Personal Items and Regular Stores

    • Personal items and practical light sources readily available in stores are often the most accessible options for those who want to invest in props for their productions. There are also times certain prop requirements are already available from people's homes or offices that a production may borrow, rent or buy.
