The Advantages of Sound Stages

A sound stage is a large, soundproof room or studio widely used in making movies. This type of location is tailor-made to attend to the basic needs of a film production. Deciding to shoot in a sound stage instead of an actual location provides a number of benefits. However, it also entails extra effort in terms of building props and sets to make the sound stage look like an authentic location for the movie.
  1. Convenience

    • A sound stage provides a reliable electrical system that can accommodate the use of large production equipment. Its large space is ideal when setting up green-screen backgrounds and special-effects equipment, and painting and building props and sets. It is also a convenient location where the production can already construct different sets within different parts of the area. This minimizes the need for other locations that require extra travel time for the production to transfer from one place to another. Being meant for large-scale production work, a sound stage also offers convenience when it comes to parking spaces for a number of large vehicles and trailers.

    Accessibility and Reliability

    • Aside from ready access points for large-scale equipment and set constructions, a sound stage has rigging assemblies meant for attaching lights and grips around the area. This makes it a versatile location when lots of equipment and assemblies to shoot sets, backgrounds and special effects are needed. Generally, renting out a sound stage is also more economical compared to renting out an actual location, especially if the production needs days, weeks or even months to work on the studio to build sets, do test shoots and conduct special-effects experiments. This type of location is also equipped not only with the technical facilities, but also studio employees who can professionally attend to the issues, concerns or requests of the production.

    Safety and Security

    • The controlled environment offered by an interior location makes a sound stage an ideal choice for safety and security. There is no risk of encountering strangers who may disturb or even threaten the production. The crew won't have problems with unpredictable elements such as the weather and other unnecessary sceneries in exterior locations. Passersby won't be a problem, either, because a sound stage is away from a public place. Moreover, it is easier to monitor the activities of people around and there is less possibility of compromising confidential information about the production in a sound stage.

    Control

    • A sound stage allows the crew to have complete control of the movie's lighting requirements. Unlike when shooting on exterior locations or even interior locations that are near doors and windows, the production doesn't have to worry about the change of sunshine and daylight when filming. There is also better control on the project's live-sound requirements as a sound stage is soundproof, meaning there are no external sound elements that the sound recording equipment can capture.
