How to Lay a B Roll Over a Video Audio Interview

In film editing, the "B roll" refers to footage that is displayed on top of audio from separate footage. Interviews and filmed narrations cut to B-roll footage to provide context for audio content. In news broadcasts, B-roll cutaways display scenes and images that give viewers a visual aid to the reporter's story. Video editing applications, such as iMovie and Final Cut, contain tools that let users cut to B-roll clips while keeping A-roll audio.

Instructions

  1. Final Cut

    • 1

Locate the footage you want to use as the B-roll in the Final Cut browser.

    • 2

Double-click the clip to open it in preview mode.

    • 3

Click in the scroll bar to place the play head where you want the clip to begin and press the "I" key. Press the space bar to preview the clip and press the space bar again where you want playback to end. Press the "O" key to set the end of the clip.

    • 4

Click and drag the clip from the preview window into the timeline. Move the clip onto the track above the A-roll clip. Make sure the cursor is pointing down and release the mouse button to drop the clip.

    • 5

Press the space bar to preview the edit. The B-roll footage will play as audio from the A-roll continues.
