How to Become a Film Makeup Artist

There are a lot different types of expertise that are brought to any film production set. One of the most important behind-the-scenes jobs is that of the makeup artist. Film and TV makeup artists face unique challenges beyond those of an ordinary makeup artist. They are often tasked with helping to create the physical appearance of highly unusual characters, anything from a femme fatale heart-breaker to a scifi monster. Makeup artists that work on a film production set must have special skills that help them work with actors to create a character that will be believable to the audience.       Volunteer at local playhouses to help actors with their makeup and wardrobe before shows. This is a great way to get a sense of the type of work you will be doing on your path to becoming a makeup up for film or television. Time constraints and the ability to apply makeup correctly so that it withstands the heat from lights, perspiration and other factors that performers face is a part of working as a professional makeup artist for film.

Whether you're trying to get in to a college program or you're hoping to be selected as an intern on a production, creating a portfolio of your work is a great way to showcase your talents as a makeup artist. Remember to offer a range of the type of work you're capable of. Enlist friends and family to volunteer as subjects. You can even create a video portfolio that offers the step by step process you undertook to create the final look. This way, you also give a potential employer an idea of how you establish and maintain a rapport with your actor. This is important, since actors sometimes sit for hours while their makeup is being applied.

      Consider applying to intern on a set as a makeup artist's assistant.. As you begin to explore working in this field, try not to be as concerned about pay as you are with building your resume and making connections within the industry. Sometimes getting your foot in door so that you can eventually land your dream job is vastly more important than a paycheck. As with any field, you will often have to prove yourself and pay your dues before you can expect it to yield a comfortable income.
