What Can I Use in Place of Film Canisters?

Film is a temperamental medium, sensitive to dust, moisture, heat and light. Although film canisters are an effective protection from the elements, they can be bulky and inconvenient. There are a few alternatives that save time and space.
  1. Large Resealable Plastic Bags

    • Resealable bags make a great alternative to plastic canisters as they are formless, clear and consolidate film bulk into one place. They are convenient for traveling as they minimize time searching between 35mm rolls.

    Freezer Bags

    • Freezer bags are airtight and durable enough for cold storage. They will effectively protect unexposed film from dust, air and moisture.

    Film Print Boxes

    • Professional motion picture developing companies will generally deliver film prints orders in print boxes or dailies boxes. These are generally made of cardboard and can provide temporary storage for reel film. They are not a secure light tight storage method. Undeveloped daylight spools and core film should be sealed in an opaque black bag.

    Proper Storage

    • Improper storing can have lasting effects on film. Kodak recommends stock should be kept at an even cool temperature with low humidly. It is recommended not to store film near hot water pipes, chemicals, mothballs, turpentine and car exhaust.

    Warning

    • Film canisters are designed specifically to prevent film damage. Alternatives may be more convenient, but they can be a risk.
