How to Make a Scrolling Movie Text

The final image left with an audience at a movie is not the final shot, it's the rolling of the credits at the end. Scrolling movie text can be used to give credit to cast and crew, introduce a film's back story, or give a large amount of textual information within the limited space of the screen. This article shows how to make a scrolling movie text in three of the most popular video editing software: Final Cut Pro 7, After Effects CS5 and Premiere Pro CS5.

Instructions

  1. Make a Scrolling Movie Text in Final Cut Pro 7

Click the generator icon in the viewer window to open its menu (it looks like the letter "A" on a filmstrip). Select "Text > Scrolling Text."

    • 2

Click the "Control" tab in the viewer window. Type your text into the box in the "Text" row, pressing "Enter" for line breaks. Adjust the font, size and indent settings below the text box to achieve your desired look.

    • 3

Click the "Video" tab. Drag the blue in and out point bars to the desired length of your scrolling credit clip. Click on the preview image in the viewer panel and drag it down to the timeline to place the text in your video.

Select the "Text Tool" in the tool panel. Click where you would like the text to begin on your composition. Type your text, pressing "Enter" for line breaks. Select "Window > Character" to open a panel that allows you to adjust the font, size and spacing.

    • 5

Select the text layer in the timeline panel. Press "P" to reveal the position property. Move the playhead to where the scrolling will begin. Press the clock icon to set the first animation keyframe. An animation keyframe marks the start or stop of a change in animation.

    • 6

Move the playhead to where the scrolling will end in the timeline. Select the "Selection Tool." Shift-click and drag the text up to its ending point. Pressing "Shift" will lock the X (side-to-side) position while letting you change the Y (up-and-down) position.
