When did James Cameron become a director?

James Cameron first directed a feature film, "Xenogenesis", in 1978.

However, it's important to note:

* "Xenogenesis" was a low-budget science fiction film that was never officially released.

* He was already making short films and working as a special effects artist before that.

So, while 1978 marks his first official feature film, his directing career really started much earlier. His breakthrough came in 1984 with "The Terminator", which solidified his status as a major director in Hollywood.
