Is one missed call the film based on a true story?

The movie One Missed Call is based on the Japanese horror movie One Missed Call (2003), which is loosely based on the Korean urban legend about the "Ringing Death". The legend revolves around a series of deaths that occur after people receive missed calls from an unknown number. Within days of receiving the calls, the recipients of the missed calls hear the sounds of their own death over their phones before ultimately dying.

Takashi Miike, the director of the Japanese film, has stated that he was inspired by the legend and wanted to create a movie that would capture the fear and paranoia that people experience when receiving missed calls from unknown numbers. The movie was released in Japan in 2003 and was a commercial success, grossing over $13 million at the Japanese box office.

The American remake of One Missed Call was released in 2008 and was also a commercial success, grossing over $46 million at the worldwide box office. However, the American version was not as well-received by critics as the Japanese original, with many criticizing its lack of originality and scares.
