Why was the globe theater called globe?

The Globe Theatre was built in 1599 on London's South Bank by Shakespeare's playing company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men. It was so-called because it was a circular building made out of timber with a roof that was thatched with reeds. The roof was open in the center, forming a "sky".
