How was the winner of election 1800 chosen?
The election of 1800 was a very close and highly contested election between Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. The Electoral College was created in Article II, Section 1, of the United States Constitution. Each state has a number of electors equal to the combined total of Senators and Representatives in Congress. On this occasion, there was a tie between Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr, meaning he required the House of Representatives to decide on who would be the next president. They chose Thomas Jefferson.
