What year did metallica start in?

Metallica was formed in 1981 in Los Angeles, California. The band was formed by drummer Lars Ulrich, who had moved from Denmark to Los Angeles with the intention of forming a heavy metal band. He placed an advertisement in a local newspaper, The Recycler, and received a response from guitarist James Hetfield. Hetfield and Ulrich met and began playing together, soon recruiting lead guitarist Dave Mustaine and bassist Ron McGovney.
