Rachel Carson (May 27, 1907 – April 14, 1964), who also wrote under the pen name Rachel L. Carson, was an American marine biologist, conservationist, and nature writer whose landmark book Silent Spring and other writings are credited with advancing the global environmental movement.
Silent Spring, an environmental science book by American biologist and nature writer Rachel Carson, was published on September 27, 1962. The book documented the detrimental environmental effects caused by the indiscriminate use of pesticides. Carson accused the chemical industry of spreading disinformation, and public officials of accepting the industry's marketing claims without investigating them. The book inspired a grassroots environmental movement and led to a national ban on DDT and other pesticides.
