Parang were developed independently in the region influenced by the development of the Kampilan, a single-edged sword similar to the Parang but characterized by a more pronounced point and a grip designed for single-handed use.

There is no single inventor of parang, as it is a tool that has been developed and refined over centuries by various indigenous peoples of Southeast Asia.
