Twilight Sparkle was turned into an alicorn by Celestia, the Princess of the Sun, in the Season 3 finale of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, "Magical Mystery Cure".

Celestia bestowed the transformation upon Twilight as a reward for her dedication to learning about friendship and spreading its power throughout Equestria.
