Shelob is a giant spider, descended from Ungoliant, the creature that devoured the light of the Two Trees of Valinor. She dwells in the dark depths of Mirkwood and has spun her web across the ancient pathways.
While she is not directly referred to as their captor in the book, she is the one who captures Thorin Oakenshield and his company, leaving them stranded in her lair.
