What was the symbolic meaning of slippers in original Wizard Oz?

There was no symbolic meaning associated with slippers in the original book, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz". It was in the cinematic adaptation of the book that the famous ruby slippers were introduced, and given the symbolic representation of home.
