How do you clean reel to recorder heads?

Cleaning reel-to-recorder (R2R) heads is important for maintaining optimum sound quality and preventing damage to your recordings. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to clean reel-to-reel heads:

Materials Needed:

1. Isopropyl alcohol (99% or higher)

2. Cotton swabs

3. Lint-free cloth

4. Compressed air (canned air)

Step 1: Preparation:

1. Power off the reel-to-reel recorder and unplug it from the power source.

2. Open the reel-to-reel deck to expose the recorder heads.

Step 2: Cleaning the Heads:

1. Dip a cotton swab in isopropyl alcohol.

2. Gently rub the cotton swab across the surface of the recorder head, removing any dirt or debris.

3. Use a separate cotton swab for each head to avoid cross-contamination.

Step 3: Drying the Heads:

1. Allow the heads to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

2. Use a lint-free cloth to gently dab and dry the heads, ensuring that there's no residual moisture left.

Step 4: Cleaning the Capstans and Pinch Rollers:

1. If your reel-to-reel deck has capstans and pinch rollers, they should also be cleaned.

2. Use a slightly damp cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol to clean these components.

3. Be gentle and avoid applying excessive pressure, as these parts are delicate.

4. Dry the capstans and pinch rollers with a clean cloth.

Step 5: Compressed Air Cleaning:

1. Once all the components are dry, use compressed air to gently blow away any remaining dust or particles from the heads, capstans, and pinch rollers.

2. Hold the can of compressed air about 10-12 inches away to avoid damaging the delicate components.

Step 6: Reassemble and Test:

1. Carefully reassemble the reel-to-reel deck.

2. Power on the recorder and play a tape to check if the cleaning has improved sound quality.

Remember to handle all components with care and avoid touching them directly with your fingers, as oils from your skin can attract dust and debris. By regularly cleaning the heads, capstans, and pinch rollers, you can ensure that your reel-to-reel recorder operates at its best and produces high-quality recordings.
