Step 4: Cleaning the Capstans and Pinch Rollers:
1. If your reel-to-reel deck has capstans and pinch rollers, they should also be cleaned.
2. Use a slightly damp cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol to clean these components.
3. Be gentle and avoid applying excessive pressure, as these parts are delicate.
4. Dry the capstans and pinch rollers with a clean cloth.
Step 5: Compressed Air Cleaning:
1. Once all the components are dry, use compressed air to gently blow away any remaining dust or particles from the heads, capstans, and pinch rollers.
2. Hold the can of compressed air about 10-12 inches away to avoid damaging the delicate components.
Step 6: Reassemble and Test:
1. Carefully reassemble the reel-to-reel deck.
2. Power on the recorder and play a tape to check if the cleaning has improved sound quality.
Remember to handle all components with care and avoid touching them directly with your fingers, as oils from your skin can attract dust and debris.
