The troll in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Philosopher's Stone in the UK) was let out by Professor Quirrell.
He was under the control of Lord Voldemort, who was residing in the back of Quirrell's head. Voldemort used Quirrell to unleash the troll as a distraction to get Harry out of the way while he stole the Philosopher's Stone.
