* 1567: After the death of her husband, Lord Darnley, and her marriage to the Earl of Bothwell, Mary was forced to abdicate the Scottish throne and imprisoned at Lochleven Castle.
* 1568: She escaped Lochleven Castle, but was defeated at the Battle of Langside and fled to England, where she was imprisoned for the rest of her life. She was initially held at Carlisle Castle.
* 1568-1572: She was moved to Bolton Castle and then Sheffield Castle.
* 1572-1587: Mary was moved to Tutbury Castle, Wingfield Manor, Coventry, Chatsworth House, and lastly to Fotheringhay Castle, where she was tried and executed in 1587.
It's important to note that she was not always kept in harsh conditions. Some of her imprisonments were more comfortable than others, depending on the location and the political climate. However, she was always under strict guard and never regained her freedom.
