What did Max do for Kevin on Christmas Eve in Freak the Mighty book?

On Christmas Eve, Max surprised Kevin with a present - some new shoes. Even though he was in the orthopedic ward, Kevin couldn't wear them until his cast came off. Max said Kevin wouldn't be in it much longer, and then he showed him two airplane tickets to Brazil; one had a name tag that said Maxwell Kane.
