How to Do the Changing Card Trick

Pick a card, any card. So begins the changing card trick, a magic feat in which you ask a member of your audience to choose a card. Your goal as the magician is to make his card reappear after it is placed back into the deck. This trick is done with a mix of palming an additional card from the deck and confusing your audience as you rearrange the card positions in your deck.

Instructions

    • 1

Shuffle a deck of cards. Fan the cards in front of someone, flipping the cards over to assure the picker that you are not using a trick deck. Have him draw one card from anywhere in the deck.

    • 2

Palm the top card from the deck as he is looking at his card. You can palm the card by placing your open hand over the top of the deck and gently bend the sides of your palm inward to grip a card. Slide your hand backwards and a card should remain attached.

    • 3

Instruct the cardholder to place his card on the top of the deck. Hold the deck out for him to place the card while keeping your palmed card out of sight.

    • 4

Take the deck and replace the palmed card onto the top of the deck. You can hide this replacement by placing the hand with the palmed card over the top card in the deck and gently allowing the palmed card to be released.

    • 5

Announce that you are placing the cardholder's card into the center of the deck. Take the top card off the deck, which is now your previously palmed card, and place it into the center of the deck. Be cautious not to allow the face of the card to be seen.

    • 6

Place the deck of cards onto a table and knock on the top of the deck. Tell spectators that you will make the chosen card appear at the top of the deck.

    • 7

Flip the top card of the deck over and show your audience. Ask if this was the cardholder's card, which if done correctly it will be.
