What is the plea in

The plea in "The Cask of Amontillado" is for mercy. Montresor, the narrator, lures his friend Fortunato into the catacombs beneath his palazzo and walls him up alive. As Fortunato realizes his fate, he pleads for mercy, but Montresor remains unmoved. He believes that Fortunato has insulted him and that he is justified in taking revenge. Montresor's plea for revenge is ultimately more powerful than Fortunato's plea for mercy.
