What is a fantasy overture?

A fantasy overture is an orchestral musical composition in the form of an overture, that takes the form of a free fantasy on the characters, themes, or moods from the dramatic work it precedes, or, more generally, from some literary or pictorial work.

They are often used as introductions to operas, ballets, or other stage works, but may also be stand-alone concert pieces.

Fantasy overtures are typically characterised by their use of rich orchestral textures, dramatic melodies, and contrasting sections, and are often seen as a way for composers to showcase their technical skill and musical imagination.
