What is a food desert?

A food desert is an area where access to healthy and affordable food is limited or nonexistent. This can be due to a number of factors, including the lack of grocery stores or supermarkets, the high cost of food, and the lack of transportation to get to grocery stores. Food deserts are often found in low-income areas and communities of color.

People who live in food deserts often have difficulty obtaining healthy food. This can lead to a number of health problems, including obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Food deserts can also have a negative impact on children's health and educational achievement.

There are a number of things that can be done to address food deserts, including increasing the availability of healthy and affordable food in low-income areas, providing transportation to grocery stores, and educating people about healthy eating.
