What is tangkap?

Tangkap is a traditional Malaysian game similar to hopscotch. It is typically played by children on the ground using a chalk or stone to draw a box-like shape with various sections. The objective of the game is to navigate through the sections by hopping on one leg and avoiding stepping on the lines or the area outside the boxes.

Here are the basic rules of tangkap:

1. Drawing the court: A rectangular court is drawn on the ground divided into equal sections. The number of sections can vary depending on the complexity of the game. Simple variations may have a 2x2 or 3x3 grid, while more complex versions can have intricate patterns.

2. Number of players: Tangkap can be played by multiple players, usually in pairs or small groups.

3. Starting point: Each player starts from the first section of the court, positioned at the "safe" zone.

4. Hop and jump: The players take turns hopping and jumping on one leg through the sections. They can only move forward, and they cannot put their feet down or step on the lines.

5. Avoid touching the lines: Any player who touches a line or steps outside the boxes is considered "caught" and must leave the court.

6. Capture the opponent: As players are hopping and jumping, one player can try to catch (tag) another player by tapping them with their foot. The player who gets caught becomes the "target" and must quickly make their way back to the starting point without being caught again.

7. Scoring: The last remaining player or the player who makes it furthest through the sections without getting caught wins the game.

Variations of tangkap may have additional rules and challenges, but the core gameplay involves hopping on one leg and avoiding being caught. It's a fun and active game that promotes coordination, balance, and agility among children.
