What is the Popcorn Polka?

Assistant

The Popcorn Polka, an American march and ragtime-influenced popular song written in 1920 by Charles E. Dubin (lyrics) and Arthur Fields (music), is best remembered for its association with the animated cartoon Betty Boop.

When the cartoon character took on a more risque personality, the song found a home in burlesque houses, which were sometimes called by the euphemism "corn palace."

The song's lyrics have been rewritten many times, and it has become a staple of folk musicians and music halls the world over.

Musical structure

The song is based on three distinct tunes:

- The introductory section uses the song "When the Red, Red Robin Comes Bob-Bob-Bobbin' Along" (Harry Woods, 1926).

- The chorus consists of the ragtime tune with the words that are also part of the title.

- The bridge section incorporates the 1880 melody for "The Arkansas Traveler".
