Where did Piazzolla come from?

Ástor Piazzolla was born on March 11, 1921 in Mar del Plata, Argentina. His father, Vicente "Nonino" Piazzolla, was an Italian immigrant from Trani, Puglia, who worked as a barber and played the bandoneon, a type of accordion popular in Argentina. His mother, Asunta "Nonina" Manetti, was also Italian, from Lucca, Tuscany. Piazzolla began studying the bandoneon at the age of eight and later took lessons from the renowned bandoneonist Aníbal Troilo. He made his professional debut in 1935 with the orchestra of Juan D'Arienzo. In the 1940s, he formed his own orchestra and began experimenting with new ways of playing the bandoneon and incorporating elements of jazz and classical music into his compositions. In 1955, he moved to New York City, where he lived for several years and collaborated with musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, and Gerry Mulligan. He returned to Argentina in 1960 and continued to tour and record until his death in 1992.
