What was the Native American sun dance for?

The sun dance is a Native religious ceremony practiced by many tribes of the western United States and Canada, mostly those originating on the Northern Plains.

Its purpose is to give thanks to the Creator, to pray for the well-being of the people and the world, and to seek visions and spiritual power.

The sun dance may also be used as a rite of passage for young men and women, and as a way to heal the sick.
