How did Rhythms and Blues get its name?

Rhythm and blues (often abbreviated as R&B) originated from the African-American community in the 1940s and 50s. The term originally came from the need for a specific term that would define new music that was neither swing nor blues, but that took elements from both. Billboard magazine created the terminology "R&B" to categorize musical recordings featuring predominantly African-American artists and musical styles of the era, such as swing and blues.
