Why was Buddy Bolden called the pioneer of jazz?

Charles "Buddy" Bolden (September 6, 1877 – November 4, 1931) was not called the pioneer of jazz. Instead, it was the Original Dixieland Jazz Band (ODJB) which was regarded as such.
