What is the head in jazz?

The head in jazz is the main theme or melody of a piece of music, often played at the beginning and end of the piece. It is typically played by all of the instruments in the ensemble and is the basic structure on which the improvisation solos are based. The head is usually simple and easy to remember so that it can be easily recognised by the audience and become the main theme.
