Where did the word Disco come from?

The word "disco" is an abbreviation of the French word "discothèque", which means "record library" or "record shop". The word "discothèque" was first used in the early 1900s to describe a place where people could listen to music on gramophones. In the 1960s, the word "discothèque" began to be used to describe a dance club where people could dance to recorded music. The word "disco" was first used in the United States in the early 1970s to describe this type of dance club.
