What does focus mean in dance terms?

Focus (or focal point) means the spot or object a dancer directs his or her gaze (or, more precisely, the head and eyeballs). It helps convey mood, intention, and dramatic meaning to the audience while also maintaining balance.

For instance, a dramatic stare could indicate intensity, emotion, or concentration. Focusing downstage makes the audience feel more directly involved, so it's common for dancers to focus this way at curtain calls or during dramatic reveals. Dancers tend to focus upstage when they want the audience to shift its focus to something offstage. By moving the focal point, dancers can lead viewers' eyes around the space and tell stories more effectively.
