Bruno's father is promoted to Commandant of Auschwitz, and the family moves to the concentration camp. Bruno is confused and upset by the changes in his life. He doesn't understand why he has to leave his friends and home behind, and he doesn't understand what is happening to the people in the concentration camp.
Bruno meets Shmuel.
One day, Bruno is exploring the grounds of the concentration camp when he sees a young boy on the other side of the fence. The boy is wearing a striped pajama, and he looks very sad. Bruno starts talking to the boy, and they become friends. Shmuel tells Bruno about his life in the concentration camp, and Bruno starts to understand the horrors of what is happening.

One day, Bruno decides to sneak into the concentration camp to visit Shmuel. He puts on a pair of striped pajamas and sneaks through the fence. Bruno finds Shmuel and they spend the day together. The next day, Bruno and Shmuel are caught by the Nazis. They are taken to a room and given a lethal injection. Bruno and Shmuel die together, and their bodies are burned in the crematorium.
