What Are Some Dance Activities for Kids Ages 6-8?

Dancing can be a wonderful way for kids to have fun while getting some great exercise and also enjoying music in the loving company of their friends. Unlike sports, which artificially train children to be unnaturally competitive with each other, dancing is a way for children to harmonize with each other and the music. Dancing to music can also be a wonderful way for children to improve their coordination and timing. Best of all, dancing is a good way to make children really happy!
  1. The Four Seasons

    • A really fun and creative dance activity for children ages 6 to 8 is to get them to act out weather from the four seasons. It is, of course, important to first choose music that appropriately matches the mood of the kind of weather an activity planner is intending to ask the children to act out. Classical music is a great way to easily plan this kind of dance activity, but a plethora of other genres of music are available from which you can choose. Have fun and be creative. Ask the children to dance as if they are gentle spring rains with a sweet song playing, or put on a wilder song to encourage dancing like a winter snow storm. Plan a meandering song to improvise playful autumn breezes, while a happy song can represent a sunny summer day.

    Flora

    • Interpretive dance is a great way to nurture and encourage the creativity of your children. Again, the choice of a variety of classical music is likely the easiest to use as instrumental music is more open to interpretation. Ask the children to imagine that they are a certain kinds of trees or a certain kind of flower. Even plants found underwater are fair play in this fun dance activity. From swaying in the wind like an elm tree to spinning in the wind like a dandelion seedling, children can find many fun ways children to interpret plants.

    Fauna

    • A dance activity for kids with even more fun possibilities is to interpret the movement of animals and insects. Children of all ages will enjoy participating when given the excuse. Even the most basic archetypal comedic movements of a chimpanzee are likely to have everyone laughing, especially when done to the timing of the right musical soundtrack. You may even want to just clap your hands and ask the children make animal sounds to the rhythm so that they can make the music as they dance.
