She is the daughter of dancer and choreographer Agnes George and of ballet dancer and teacher Lee Theodore Garrett.
She is also the mother of violinist David Garrett.
Dove Garrett trained with her parents, and studied ballet with David Howard. She graduated from the School of American Ballet. She began her professional dance career in 1965 as a soloist with the Paul Sanasardo Dance Company, and appeared in several Broadway productions.
She went on to dance with the Harkness Ballet, the Joffrey Ballet and the American Ballet Theatre, where she became a principal dancer in 1968. She retired from dancing in 1976, after giving birth to David Garrett.
Dove Garrett has taught ballet at various schools, including the Joffrey Ballet School and the American Ballet Theatre's Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School of Dance. She has also choreographed several works for both ballet and Broadway productions.
She currently resides in New York City, where she continues to teach and choreograph.
